What "Easy" Means at 5ร5
Easy 5ร5 puzzles are built around high-overlap clues: row and column clues where the block length is close to the total line length. This means most lines have only one or two valid arrangements, and the overlap between those arrangements confirms cells immediately โ before any cross-referencing with other lines is required.
On a well-constructed Easy 5ร5, the first overlap pass resolves 18โ22 of 25 cells. The remaining three to seven cells resolve in a short second pass using X-mark elimination from the updated constraint state. No arrangement listing, no hypothesis testing โ just clean, progressive logic.
The Easy 5ร5 Solving Approach
Phase 1 โ Overlap sweep: Process all 10 lines (5 rows, 5 columns) with overlap analysis. For each clue, place the block at the leftmost valid position, then at the rightmost. Mark every cell that falls inside the block in both positions as filled. Mark every cell that can't be reached by any valid position as empty (X). On Easy 5ร5, this first pass resolves the large majority of the grid.
Phase 2 โ Cross-reference pass: Return to any line with unresolved cells. The fills and X-marks from Phase 1 have updated the constraint state of every perpendicular line. Apply overlap analysis again to each unresolved line using the updated state. Most remaining cells resolve here.
Phase 3 โ Final cells: The last few cells follow directly from the updated constraints. At Easy difficulty, no line at this stage requires more than two valid arrangements to be considered before a unique solution emerges.
