The natural step from 5×5. Players who can solve 5×5 Easy reliably will find 6×6 Easy a smooth and satisfying progression. Twelve lines instead of ten, 36 cells instead of 25 — enough additional complexity to feel like a genuine step up without the technique demands that enter at 8×8.

A richer constraint network. At 6×6, the 12-line network starts producing more interesting cross-referencing scenarios than 5×5. A clue of "3" in a 6-cell line — common at Medium and Hard — produces zero direct overlap on its own, meaning progress on that line depends entirely on what the perpendicular lines provide. Both are good starting points, but 5×5 is slightly more recommended for complete beginners. The overlap patterns on 5×5 Easy are more immediate and produce faster feedback on whether your technique is correct. If you've already tried 5×5 Easy and it felt comfortable, 6×6 Easy is the right next step.

The difficulty increase is moderate at Easy and Medium — more passes are required, and some clue types (particularly single "3" clues) produce no direct overlap and require cross-referencing from the start. At Hard through Evil, the additional two lines and eleven cells extend the hypothesis cycles but don't change the technique. The increase feels more significant at lower difficulties than at higher ones.

At 36-cell resolution, images are still relatively abstract — more suggestive than detailed. The reveal is cleaner than at 5×5 and shapes are more recognizable, but the detailed pixel art that makes Picross visually compelling starts appearing at 8×8 and becomes genuinely expressive at 10×10 and above.
