What "Medium" Means at 12×12
The first overlap pass on a Medium 12×12 resolves perhaps 35–55 cells — roughly a third of the grid. The remaining 89–109 cells come from multi-pass cross-referencing, where each confirmed cell propagates constraint data into its perpendicular lines, progressively reducing the valid arrangements of lines that produced no overlap on early passes.
At 12×12, the "6" clue presents a challenge analogous to the "5" clue at 10×10: with slack equal to the block length, no cell falls inside every valid position, and the line must wait for imported perpendicular data before any of its cells can be confirmed. Step 3 — High-slack line revisit: After each full pass cycle, process every line that produced no overlap in Step 1. Each now carries perpendicular fills from the previous passes. Reapply overlap analysis using the updated cell states — at least one new cell per affected line typically becomes determinable.
